Pangani

Tanga, Tanzania

The name Pangani comes from the river that runs through northern part of this historical town. Pangani is an ancient town, and is believed to have been established before the 6th century BC. It played an important role during the slave trade era as a trading port. Several historical sites in and around the town serve as reminders of the strong Arab influence and the subsequent German and British colonial influence.

Nowadays it is mainly a fishing town dotted with coconut trees, providing beautiful beaches for quiet vacations.

There are several attractions in Pangani: Pangani Falls, a waterfall that provides electricity for Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Moshi; Pangani River, which hosts birds and crocodiles; and Maziwi Island, a nature reserve that provides areas for snorkeling and a dolphin tour. A walking tour though the town showcases the historic buildings and the former slave labor camps and slave market site.
