Best time to travel: June - March

On the ‘Best of Tanzania’ Luxury Safari, you will experience Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, the Serengeti, and the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. Spectacular wildlife watching is mixed with impressive landscapes, picturesque forests, steep hanging craters, and the seemingly endless grass savannah of the Serengeti.

Day 1: Arusha– Tarangire National Park

After a short briefing, you will drive in the direction of Tarangire National Park. Giant baobab trees, the bush savannah, and the seasonal marshes add to the wonder of this nature reserve. The park encompasses almost 2600 sq km, roughly the size of Luxemburg.

Tarangire National Park is considered to be one of the best places in East Africa to watch elephants up close. You will also have a chance to see the beautiful Masai giraffe, various gazelles and antelopes, buffalos, lions, leopards, baboons, and over one hundred different species of birds. After a day of wildlife watching, you will leave the park and arrive at the Maramboi Tented Camp in the afternoon. Here you will stay overnight.

Maramboi Tented Camp: Maramboi Tented Camp offers permanent camp facilities and endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands and palm-lined desert between Tarangire and Manyara Lake. A visit to the area is essential for anyone interested in evolution and the origins of humankind.

This camp has thirty spacious tents built on ample wooden decks, including two units with two rooms interconnected, ideal for families with children. They all have en suite facilities and private verandas with 24-hour electric lighting.

Included: Lunch; Dinner

Day 2: Tarangire Area - Serengeti

After breakfast, the journey takes you through the vegetation-rich area of the Mbulu Highlands, where wheat, corn, and coffee are cultivated. You will travel further upwards until you reach the Ngorongoro Nature Reserve and the volcano pass. Having passed the crater highlands, you will soon see the plains of the southern Serengeti. You will stop for lunch at Oldupai Gorge, the ‘cradle of humanity’.

A nearby museum documents the work of the archaeologists who discovered the site and a visit can be arranged. On the journey to the accommodation for the night, you will start to understand the meaning of the word "Serengeti" which comes from the Masai word “Siringitu”, meaning the endless plain.

The southern Serengeti plains seem to go on forever, stretching to a horizon that is only interrupted by the so-called “Kopjes” or “Inselbergs”, strange-looking rock formations. These plains are the ideal hunting grounds for cheetahs and other big cats. In the afternoon, you will reach your destination for the day. According to the season, you will stay either at the Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp within the National Park.

Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp: A mobile tented camp located in Central Serengeti, strategically located to cover the vast Serengeti Plains. The camp offers comfortable accommodations and a unique opportunity to enjoy a real safari camp experience. The camp is only a two-hour scenic drive from Oldupai Gorge Museum and Grumeti River.

Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 3: Serengeti National Park

Day 3 is set aside for wildlife watching and the Serengeti is at your disposal. The best vantage points and worthwhile areas are chosen to give you the best possible chance to observe animals and to capture your perfect photo. Depending upon the time of year, you have the chance to see the great migration with a hundred thousand wildebeests and zebras. During the small rainy season in October and November, you will typically see these herds moving from the Kenyan Masai Mara through the northwest Serengeti to the plains in the south.

After the long rainy season in April through June, the herds travel slowly back through the west and northwest of Serengeti. With fluctuations in rainfall, this timetable can change the animals’ migration times and routes. Your guide will know where and when to find the animals and make sure that you can see the animals from the best spots in the national park. The Frankfurt Zoological Institute has a base at the Serengeti and a visit can be arranged. Depending on the season, the accommodation of the night is either the Serengeti Kati Kati Tented Camp.

Included: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Conservation Area - Karatu

On your outward journey to the Serengeti National Park Gate, you will have another chance to watch the beautiful animals of Africa. Leaving behind the wonderful Seronera Valley with its wildebeests and zebras as well as occasional visits by lions and other large cats such as cheetahs and leopards, you will leave the Serengeti and drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

After a picnic lunch at a designated picnic spot, you will drive to the Oldupai Gorge for a tour of the museum and its surrounding areas. You will then drive to Ngorongoro Crater, arriving at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge for dinner and overnight. As soon as you reach the crater’s edge, you will see the giant Ngorongoro Crater in which the caldera opens before you in all its glory. You will overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge: Nestled on the brink of Ngorongoro Crater's soaring eastern rim, the lodge offers comfortable accommodations with especially convenient access to the Crater's teeming wildlife below. Being the one and ONLY lodge on the eastern Crater rim offering sunset views, Ngorongoro Sopa certainly has an enviable location! Generously sized picture windows are abundant throughout the lodge; the dining room, bar, lounge, swimming pool, gardens, and guest rooms are all situated to take maximum advantage of the stunning Crater vistas below.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater - Karatu

After breakfast at the break of the day, you will ascend down the adventurous trail into the crater. Inside the biggest crater in the world, a number of different animals live. Its grass steppes and acacia forests are home to almost all the species of animals found in the East African savannah. In only a few hours, you have the chance to spot the big five - lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinoceros, and leopards. After extensive wildlife watching and a picnic in the crater, you will leave the highlands of Ngorongoro in the afternoon and travel back to Karatu. You will spend the night at Ngorongoro Farm House.

Ngorongoro Farm House: A small and exclusive lodge facing the Oldeani Volcano, only 5 kilometers from the Ngorongoro Lolduare gate, was built to offer our clients an original experience reminiscent of the atmosphere of the old days. Ngorongoro Farm House offers 52 room cottages, 49 standard rooms, and 3 suite rooms, all with ample space inside, built in the style of an old colonial farm and rustically decorated with local materials and full of details of good taste, with the purpose of offering our clients an imaginary journey to the life of days gone by.

Today, you will visit the last national park on the northern circuit; Lake Manyara National Park. This protected area encloses a large part of the alkaline lake of the same name. This amazing lake is the seasonal home for the giant flamingo colony and many more waterfowl.

On the lakeshore, you can also observe elephants, hippopotami, buffalos, guenons, banded mongooses, and numerous types of gazelles and antelopes. This park is also well known for the “tree lions” in which tree climbing is an abnormal behavior for lions. In the park, you can regularly observe the tree lions taking a nap in the tree canopies or escaping from the heat on the ground. After watching the animals and exploring the national park for the whole day, you will leave the park in the afternoon and travel back to Ngorongoro Farm House arriving for dinner and overnight.
