Very little is known about the origins of the Maasai tribe. Some believe they originate from the North of Africa. Others believe they are one of the lost tribes of Israel – all very romantic visions of a culture whose habits and lifestyle still remain, for the most part, entwined with the savannahs in which they now settle.
The tribe can be distinguished by their colorful fashions of the ‘shuka’ (the robes worn across the shoulder often in red, purple, blue, and orange) and the beaded jewelry that adorns both the men's and women’s ears, wrists, ankles, heads, and necks. Their villages are still made from traditional materials of cow manure and wood. Cattle are of the highest importance to the Maasai; they provide food, income, and prestige.
When you visit the Maasai, you will be treated to a day of experiencing their everyday lives. You will learn how to make the beautiful beaded jewelry they wear, participate in a traditional dance, and share a meal of grilled meat, the staple of the Maasai diet.
