Mahale Mountain National Park offers several outstanding attractions for visitors, from tracking wild chimpanzees to mountain climbing, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white sandy beaches. The park is famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa.

Day 1: Arusha/Dar-es-Salaam – Mahale Mountain National Park

Start your safari to Mahale early in the morning. Upon arrival at Mahale Mountain National Park from either Arusha or Dar es Salaam, you will be picked up and transferred to the lodge by boat, where you will enjoy your hot lunch at the lodge. After getting your lunch, start a short chimpanzee tracking in the forest. Return to the lodge for dinner and bonfire and an overnight at Nkungwe Tented Camp.

Nkungwe Tented Camp: Set on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, under the forested Mahale mountain range, Nkungwe Tented Camp occupies an idyllic beach location. The Mahale Mountains are home to the largest known populations of chimpanzees in the world, making tracking chimpanzees in the Mahale Forest the highlight of this camp. Accommodating up to twenty guests, each tented banda faces Lake Tanganyika, allowing for personal wildlife viewing from private verandas, or for watching the stunning African sunset over the lake.

Day 2: Mahale – Boat Safaris

Early in the morning, take your breakfast at the lodge. Start chimpanzee tracking in the forest followed by a hot lunch at the lodge. Chimpanzee tracking is the star attraction of Mahale and guided treks into the forest are taken daily. The length of the tracking depends on the movements of the chimpanzees but there is no limit on time spent observing the chimps. Other primates are often encountered and the forest is also home to leopards and bush pigs.

All safaris in the forest are on foot and require a general level of fitness. After spending the morning exploring the park, return to the camp for a hot lunch and some relaxation. After getting your lunch, start a boat safari for bird-watching and game viewing. Return to the lodge for dinner and a bonfire and later for an overnight at Kungwe Beach Lodge.

Day 3: Mahale – Fishing on Lake Tanganyika

Go for a final morning of chimpanzee tracking before lunch. After lunch, go fishing on Lake Tanganyika. Go back for dinner and bonfire at the lodge and then overnight at Kungwe Beach Lodge.

Day 4: Mahale Mountain National Park – Arusha

Get up a little bit early to have your breakfast at the lodge. Today is different! Relax on the beach. Enjoy the natural coolness of the lake while resting on the sand. Later transfer to the airstrip.
